Did you know that Saint Joseph is the patron saint of Croatia? On 10th June 1687, the Croatian Parliament chose Saint Joseph as the patron saint for the Kingdom of Croatia and the Croatian people.

Above the old Tuhelj cemetery, at the top of a hill, sits the Chapel of Saint Joseph. It was first mentioned in 1727. An imposing bell tower dominates the old building and is situated at a central axis. The main altar houses statues of the Holy Family. Above it, there is a fascinating depiction of the betrothal of the Virgin Mary and Joseph.

The side altars are dedicated to Saint Vitus and Saint Anne. A statue of Saint Mark Krizin is also located in the chapel. Historical sources state that this might be the oldest depiction of this saint in the Zagreb Archdiocese. The statues of Saint John of Nepomuk, Saint Peter and Saint James the Great also adorn the chapel.

Alongside the shrine, there is a sacristy on the northern side. The chapel was built in the baroque style but with a strong Gothic influence, which was the custom for contemporary masters in Hrvatsko Zagorje. The sacristy has a late Gothic portal, and the main altar was built in the late baroque style. It is important to note that the outside of the chapel lacks architectural decorations and openings. However, the bell tower will catch the eye of every traveller as it captivates with its beauty.
