Chapel of Saint Philip and James

  • Chapel of Saint Philip and James

The chapel of Saint Philip and James stands tall at the top of a hill, surrounded by beautiful nature, close to the town of Klanjec in the village of Letovčan Novodvorski. This beautiful building is surrounded by centuries-old trees and was first mentioned in 1802. Pilgrims and travellers can reach it following narrow, winding country trails on which almost every crossing has a wooden crucifix. From the top of the hill, one can experience a beautiful view of the picturesque hills of Zagorje.

In this area filled with pristine nature, clean air, and serene silence, which is interrupted only by bird song, the chapel of Saint Philip and James is a real gem, filled with cultural and religious art riches. If you are looking for a picturesque, hidden and romantic place for your wedding, this charming chapel may just be the right choice.

At the site of the current brick chapel, there stood a wooden chapel in the 17th century. The new building was built in the 18th century and has often been repaired and renovated over the years. Today, the chapel has a modern grey facade, roofing and bell tower. The building is comprised of a nave with curved corners, with a slightly narrower shrine and apse. The shrine also had a sacristy built into it on the northern side. The chapel is equipped with beautiful wooden pews adorned with dark red velvet. There is a small choir above the entrance. In the central part of the building where the Eucharist is performed is an altar with a hand-crafted table made from hardwood. The ground floor is shaped like a portico, opened up by semi-circular portals on three sides, the main portal being more intricately decorated. The bell tower rises above the main entrance.

Mass is held for special occasions in this chapel, for the needs of parishioners, and to mark more significant holidays. First and foremost, 3rd May is celebrated as the day of Saint Philip and James, the apostles of Jesus and martyrs. According to teachings, James was the first bishop of Jerusalem and was present at the Council of Jerusalem. He was martyred in the year 62. It is believed that he wrote his eponymous epistle himself. Both apostles can be found in all four lists of apostles in Matthew, Mark and Luke’s gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles. Philip can be found in fifth and James, son of Alphaeus, in ninth place.
